Usage you can defend

  • Active use, not open windows

An application counts as in use when it holds the foreground, works the CPU or moves data on the network. Idle time does not inflate the figures.

    Documentation
  • One row per product

Hours used, utilisation as a share of a working day, days active, sessions, active versus installed devices, last used and trend, over a window you choose.

    Documentation
  • Installed, unused

A filter lists software that is installed but saw no use in the chosen window: the first list to check before buying more seats.

    Documentation
  • Per-device detail

For any product, see hours and sessions per day, the executables and versions behind it, and every device ranked by use.

    Documentation
  • Discover, then target

Run a group in discovery mode to survey everything that runs, curate what you find, then switch back to tracking only the products you govern.

    Documentation
  • Product policy

Mark each product as approved, tolerated, prohibited or needing review. Curation actions are audited.

How licence consumption is counted

A licence holds one or more entitlement lines (perpetual, subscription, OEM or trial), each with its own metric, quantity, cost and term. Consumption is counted within the licence’s scope, and retired assets never count.

MetricCounted as
Per deviceDistinct machines in scope that have the product installed or have been seen running it
Per userDistinct users of those machines seen in the last 90 days
Per coreThe sum of CPU cores across those machines
SiteCompliant while the site licence term is current

From position to action

  • Licence position

Each licence is shown as under-utilised, compliant, over-deployed or without entitlements, with the gap in units.

  • Reclaim recommendations

Seats whose weighted use over 30, 90 and 180 days is low and falling are suggested for reclaim.

  • True-up report

What to buy or drop before a renewal, as CSV or PDF.

  • Ask Vera

Ask in plain language which tools are least used, or which licences are over-deployed.

Limits worth knowing

  • Usage measurement needs Scout (or the machine agent’s inventory module) on the device. Devices that are only imported have no usage data.
  • Foreground (focused) use is measured on Windows. On Linux, use is measured from CPU and network activity.
  • There are no vendor-specific licence connectors. Entitlements are entered or imported by you.
